The world is full of exciting mysteries that have not been solved. The Americas is proving to be the next archeological hot spot. The crystal skulls are on of those archeological items that have received some fantastic claims as to their origin and possible uses. It is propertied that there are thirteen crystal skulls found through out Central and South America that have special powers.
The first skull to of been found is called "The Skull of Doom" because it was once said that it bode ill for anyone who mocked it. (Nickell and Nisbet, 1998:14) It was supposed to of been found by Anna Mitchell-Hedges in 1927 at the lost Mayan city of Lubaantun in Belize, then British Honduras, while on an excavation with her father. It weighs at eleven and a half pounds and is made of clear quartz There is no recorded provenience that the skull was found in. (Nickell and Nisbet, 14) F.A Mitchell- Hedges stated in his book published in 1954 that the skull of doom is at least 3,600 years old and was used by the High Priests of the Maya when performing esoteric rites. (Nickell, 2006: 15) Other skulls have been found, but none quite as well noted as the Mitchell-Hedges skull. There is even a strong market for easily rendered duplicates today.
