I believe
that the future of education centers not upon the accumulation of information
itself but rather, the ability to locate information. The successful
learner knows "things" but also has the ability to find information
that is not known. When it comes to information resident on the Internet,
the key to success is the ability to locate information. There are many,
many search engines devoted to this pursuit. A current
favorite is Google. It is fun to
ask fellow techies to identify their favorite search engines; the answers
vary as do the way searches are done. To learn about searching in general,
Patrick Crispen has a very good slide presentations on his Classrom
Resources site (Google 101: Stop Searching and Start Finding). Another
good general resource is Search
Engine Watch; this enables the serious searcher to keep up with
developments in the field, as does "Search
Engine Showdown." Because the Web is not indexed in any consistent
way, a tutorial about Web
Search Strategies may be helpful. Don't miss The
Spider's Apprentice for another great resource. And if you find
this overwhelming, knowing how
to choose a search engine or directory is the key!
