Rationale

Interactive Fiction extends beyond simply using the computer as a cognitive tool. Interactive texts provide either choices or feedback based on individual problem solving experiences. Within a constructivist approach and a Deweyan philosophy--that learning begins with the learner's curiosity--interactive media produces an environment conducive to inquiry-based learning. Throughout this site, we scaffolded learning--a la Vygotsky--bringing you from theory, through progressive stages of practice. Educational implications in the field of literacy are exciting, providing students with scaffolded learning opportunities as they become empowered with independent problem-solving abilities. Poststructuralists and Critical Theorists--such as Derrida--stated that a paradigm shift has begun to take place in terms of defining literacy. Is electronic writing a direct response to strengths and weaknesses of the printed book? This workshop provides a hands-on, interactive approach for teachers and researchers to experience the power of this exciting "new literacy" and a forum in which to discuss potential problems.
